How many ways are there to draw "well?"

In Studio Drawing, students explore this question throughout the semester in projects aimed at building skills to draw naturalistically while also challenging and expanding their notions of what "good" drawing looks like.

Jackie Story, Self-Portrait Still Life
Our first project of the term is a Still Life as Self-Portrait. After learning classic techniques like sight measuring for accuracy and contour drawing, students draw a still life in which the objects, composition, line work and color symbolize and express who they are. We discuss how unplanned or subconscious choices are expressive of the artist as well. This project helps me to get to know students early in the term!
For many, the idea of "good" drawing is that it looks realistic or naturalistic. This is so much the water we swim in that we may not wonder where it comes from! In fact this concept traces to Ancient Greece, whose tradition of naturalism was revived in the European Renaissance. Naturalism is thus a specifically Western criterion for artistic quality. There are without a doubt many applications for drawing this way: engineers, designers, architects (and artists) use it daily; in Studio Drawing, however, these skills are framed as only one of many ways to draw.

Nuestro primer proyecto del término es una naturaleza muerta como autorretrato. Después de aprender técnicas clásicas como la medición visual para precisión y el dibujo de contornos, los estudiantes dibujan una naturaleza muerta en la que los objetos, la composición, el trabajo de línea y el color simbolizan y expresan quiénes son. What are other ways to draw, you might be asking? Expressive abstraction is the focus of the next project. Looking at Expressionist artists like Van Gogh and Kokoschka, and collages by Romare Bearden, students make either an Expressionist-inspired portrait or a Gesture Collage with varied mark-making (gesture is quick drawing capturing suggested movement).
